Blog #3: Martin O’Malley and Social Media

Martin O’Malley and Social Media
·         Does he have a website?:

o   Yes! Martin O’Malley has a website (https://martinomalley.com/).
o   O’Malley’s website includes:
1. A place to show your support by signing up for emails.
2. A biography
3. A section describing his vision.
4. A tab titled “latest” which features recent articles about both O’Malley and his competitors.
5. A tab that allows readers to “get involved” providing volunteer opportunities, events O’Malley will be at, internship opportunities, and a commit to vote option.
6. A link to his other forms of social media.

·         What social media platforms is he participating on right now?:

o   Martin O’Malley participates in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube, and Snapchat.

·         How active is your candidate on each of these platforms?:

o   Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/MartinOMalley
§  O’Malley’s biggest following is on Facebook with 79,767 likes. O’Malley’s Facebook features a combination of articles, pictures, and videos from his other forms of social media. Typically O’Malley posts a link to a video, picture, or article and then includes his own paragraph explaining said video, picture, or article. O’Malley usually posts on his Facebook every day, usually more than one time per day. Although he has 79,767 people who like him on Facebook, he only receives hundreds of likes and even less shares on each post. His highest liked post was about the Republican vs. Democratic debate which pulled in 1,893 likes and 349 shares.

o   Twitter- https://twitter.com/martinomalley
§  O’Malley has a follower count of 2,010 on Twitter and has about 11.4K tweets in total. His twitter is less interactive than his Facebook. O’Malley mostly tweets links to other websites or articles. He does include the occasional retweet or picture. It looks like O’Malley post on twitter almost every day sending out anywhere from 1-5 tweets daily. His tweets don’t usually break 100 favorites or retweets.

o   Instagram- https://instagram.com/martinomalley/
§  O’Malley’s Instagram is far from interesting with only 101 posts and 2,793 followers. O’Malley averages anywhere from 100-200 likes per picture indicating people are not very active on his page. Some of his posts only have one comment which indicates that not a lot of discussion is being facilitated on his Instagram. Just to put things in perspective for you, Kim Kardashian’s latest Instagram post has 327,327 likes and 1,638 comments in only 4 hours. Donald Trump’s latest Instagram post has 6,769 likes and 546 comments in 51 minutes. If you haven’t gotten the point yet, O’Malley needs to step up his Instagram game ASAP.

o   Pinterest- https://www.pinterest.com/martinomalley/
§  Yes, you’re reading this right. Martin O’Malley has a Pinterest account. It’s hard to know for sure if this is actually him running the page because Pinterest doesn’t certify people the way Instagram and Twitter do, but it looks pretty promising. O’Malley has 7 Boards, 75 total Pins, and 566 followers. His boards include “Goals to Move Maryland Forward”, “Books Worth Reading”, “Pictures I took with my phone”, “My T.V. Appearances”, “Maryland Pinterest Business Pitch Contest”, “DNC 2012”, and “Fiscal Responsibility”. Personally, I’m impressed with how many followers he has on Pinterest.

o   Youtube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb7eu74-_tCNLw9FfavvKnw
§  O’Malley has his own Youtube channel which basically just contains a bunch of videos of him at debates and doing other things along those lines. My assumption is that links to these videos are imbedded or featured on his other social media sites. He has a ton of videos, too may for me to count (and I can’t find where it says how many he has) and none of them have substantial amounts of views. Each video pulls around 100 views.

o   Snapchat- @GovernorOMalley
§  Although O’Malley does have a Snapchat according to his Facebook account, I’m not entirely sure what he posts on here because he doesn’t currently have a “My Story”. Judging by the Facebook post announcing his presence on Snapchat, he uses Snapchat to share a more personal side of himself. The Facebook post says, “I just joined Snapchat. Follow me @GovernorOMalley for a sneak peek at my trip to New Hampshire.” I guess I will find out how often he is active on Snapchat in the weeks to come!

·     Are there any viral videos or important online sites about your candidate that the candidate and/or campaign/staff didn't create?:

o   As of right now I haven’t really found any. I suppose his character on The Wire could count as something viral he and his campaign staff didn’t create. He also got backlash for his tough-on-crime policies and got some media attention for events surrounding that (I’ve posted about these things in both of my other blogs so I don’t want to bore anyone). Other than that, I haven’t seen anything really go “viral” regarding Martin O’Malley.

Game Plan:

·        o   A plan for what Martin O’Malley needs to do to boost his online presence for 2016 would probably be to work on gaining a bigger audience. Once he gets that audience he needs to figure out a way to facilitate conversation and make his social media interactive. He has a big following on Facebook, but it seems like people just skip over his posts and don’t find any reason to share or comment. I hate how dramatic any political race is, but honestly, drama is the best way to gain an audience and make people interested. O’Malley is playing it pretty safe so far which isn’t going to help him win.

Blog #2- Image and Issue Stances

Martin O’Malley’s current public image mostly revolves around the fact that he’s the former democratic tough-on-crime Maryland governor. In relation to this fact, O’Malley even inspired the character Tommy Carcetti on HBO’s “The Wire”. O’Malley is most known for his zero tolerance policing that some argue lead to the death of Freddie Gray in the hands of six police officers. I think if O’Malley wants to win this election he needs to make waves in more than just one area. Every article I read focuses on one of four things about O’Malley; 1. His tough on crime approach and the death of Freddie Gray. 2. He is the former governor of Maryland and has 15 years of experience in public services. 3. He inspired a TV character. 4. He is in a band. All of this is great but majority of this info has little to do with his stance on various issues and his run for presidency.

As the video above highlights, O’Malley’s strengths include his past experience, his age, and the fact that he hasn’t had a relative or spouse who has already been president. Martin’s campaign is really focusing on his 15 years of prior experience. Additionally, they are trying to push the fact that O’Malley can “get the job done” and produce results. In the YouTube interview above (1:35), O’Malley states, “I have the experience though 15 years of public services and executive in a big city and also as the governor of a state of getting things done.” Later on in the interview he states (2:19), “I believe that there are new perspectives that are needed for us to solve the problems that we face as Americans and also for the problems that we face as people on this planet. And I believe that new perspective and new leadership is needed.” He also says in the video (2:57), "Let's be honest here: The presidency of the United States is not some crown to be passed between two families. It is an awesome and sacred trust to be earned and exercised on behalf of the American people."

O’Malley’s weaknesses would include the fact that his campaign is only highlighting one main issue, that he’s the “tough” guy who can get things done. After investigating his stance on multiple other issues, it’s clear O’Malley is a complex guy with interesting and unique views. It’s unknown why these issues aren’t getting more attention, and if he plans on getting everyone’s attention, he’s going to have to start highlighting other issues. Even on O’Malley’s website, “criminal justice reform” is the first issue that pops up under his vision tab. Given the issues are alphabetized, but if I just went to his website not paying attention, I probably would’ve made the assumption that criminal justice was his biggest concern.

Some opportunities would include the fact that he inspired a TV character, that he’s in a band, and that he does have experience. If people know the character O’Malley inspired, that can either sway them for or against O’Malley. A lot of people are interested in watching TV more than they’re interested in politics, so O’Malley has a unique opportunity here in introducing himself to those people. The fact he’s in a band is pretty irrelevant other than the fact that it makes him seem more like a real person with real hobbies that don’t just include religiously reading the news and getting into debates via his Facebook status. Since O’Malley has experience, especially in the case of police brutality, I think this is his biggest opportunity. Police brutality and racial profiling/discriminating are HUGE issues in the media right now. Highlighting his experience dealing with a case that may have been influenced by his policing policies can make or break this election for him.

Threats are probably going to be the fact that he’s never really in the media unless someone is talking bad about him. It’s going to be really hard for him to step out of Hillary Clinton’s shadow. I’m not sure how many people care about Martin O’Malley at this point, and this fact seriously threatens his chance of winning the election.

Blog #1: Who is Martin O'Malley?

Who is Martin O’Malley?

Martin O'Malley is one of many democrat candidates running for president in the 2016 election. According to MartinOMalley.com, Martin O'Malley is the "former Governor of Maryland, Mayor of Baltimore, and a city councilor," (MartinOMalley.com). O'Malley was born in Washington, D.C. on January 18th 1963. O’Malley is one of six children in his family. O’Malley attended and graduated from Catholic University and in 1988 received his law degree from the University of Maryland. He was appointed as an Assistant State’s Attorney that same year. At the age of 28 he became a part of the Baltimore City Council, serving for eight years. Following his term on the Baltimore City Council, O’Malley ran for Mayor of Baltimore, winning with an astounding 90% of the vote.

What is O’Malley’s political experience?

Martin O’Malley has been close to politics his whole life as his father was Assistant United Sates Attorney and his mother worked in congress for close to 30 years. Furthermore, and as I stated above, O'Malley has plenty of practice in politics. Under the guidance of O'Malley, Maryland was recognized by the Washington Post as one of the top states holding down the top states for holding down the cost of college tuition, and additionally was recognized for having some of the best public schools in America five years in a row. (MartinOMalley.com).

But is he qualified to be the next president of the United Sates?

Martin O’Malley is more than qualified to be the next president of the United States. With the combination of his past experience in politics, and the results generated during his time in office, many would argue O’Malley is a fantastic candidate. O’Malley has only lost one election to date, so it will be interesting to see if after the 2016 election, that number will increase to two.

Understanding O’Malley and his 2016 campaign

Some information I think is important to understanding O’Malley and his 2016 campaign would be:

1.     This is not his first rodeo.

2.    O’Malley is known for producing results. From my research, O’Malley is fond of using data driven approaches when producing desired results. He even created a program called CitiStat which tracked how well Baltimore government was serving its citizens.

3.       O’Malley is facing scrutiny for his “tough-on-crime” stance after the death of African-American Freddie Gray at the hands of police.

4.       According to Abc.com, O’Malley stated in one interview that, “The two things in our household that we'd never dream of skipping were an election and mass,” –O’Malley.

5.       Despite his religious background, O’Malley is still for gay marriage and abortion and follows a liberal approach on most issues.

6.       O’Malley is a family man and even performs in with his Celtic rock band in local bars.
